Airwallex vs Stripe vs x402 for Australian agent payments

· 27 AUG 2026 ·5 min

Airwallex and Stripe both want to be the account layer for agentic commerce. x402 is a different bet: HTTP 402 and a wallet, often on Solana. For Australian teams the split is FX, AUD, and whether the buyer is a Stripe/Airwallex customer or an agent with coins.

Listen: Airwallex vs Stripe vs x402 for Australian agent payments~6 min

Most Australian "agent payments" pitches collapse two jobs:

  1. Who holds the business account (AUD, FX, payouts, cards)
  2. How the agent pays for a single HTTP call (402, no checkout)

Airwallex and Stripe compete on (1), and both now talk agentic commerce protocols on top. x402 is almost entirely (2). Mixing them up is how you buy the wrong stack.

Airwallex vs Stripe vs x402: account layer vs HTTP 402

Airwallex's pitch

Airwallex is a global payments and treasury company. The Australian story is old and real: multi-currency wallets, local payout rails, FX that is not "whatever the card network did to you."

Their agentic-commerce writing (2026) puts them next to Stripe on ACP and UCP (checkout protocols for agents), plus AP2, with MCP/A2A mentioned as integration surface. The differentiator they claim is FX and multi-currency wallets, not a new HTTP status code.

If you are an AU company paying suppliers in USD, EUR, and SGD, and you hate card FX leakage, Airwallex is a treasury conversation. Agents are a new client of that treasury.

What it is not: a permissionless pay-per-call protocol for a random agent that only has a Solana wallet.

Stripe's pitch

Stripe is already the default card processor for a lot of AU SaaS. Agentic work showed up as:

  • ACP with OpenAI (agent checkout)
  • MPP with Tempo (HTTP 402 machine payments, cards via Shared Payment Tokens, Tempo stablecoins)
  • PaymentIntents so the charge still looks like Stripe

If your money already lives in Stripe, MPP is the least surprising way to let an agent pay. We covered that split in Stripe MPP, Tempo, and x402.

Stripe's weakness in Australia is the same as it always was: FX and global accounts vs a specialist like Airwallex. That weakness is about the company's money, not about whether MPP can 402.

x402's pitch

x402 does not open an AU company account. It answers: this GET costs 2 cents of AUDD (or USDC) on Solana, here is the 402, pay and retry.

No Airwallex application. No Stripe customer object on the buyer. Discoverable from OpenAPI and MCP. That is Milypay: Australian datasets, pay-per-call.

Funding the wallet can still use boring ramps. Settlement of the 402 is onchain. Those are different steps. See Milypay + MoneyGram.

Airwallex vs Stripe is who runs your operating account.

x402 vs MPP is how the machine pays the API.

You can use Airwallex for payroll and x402 for the product. They do not replace each other.

What we tell Australian founders

You already bleed FX on suppliers and payouts. Talk to Airwallex (or stay on Stripe if the volume is not worth the switch). Do not wait for an agent protocol to fix FX. It will not.

You already run Stripe and want agents to buy the same API. Look at Stripe MPP. Keep AUD in the Stripe balance. Read x402 vs MPP so you know what you are not getting (permissionless Solana catalogs).

You are selling data or tools to agents that will never fill a Stripe form. x402 on Solana. That is the Milypay line. Australia in the dataset, AUD in the token, HTTP in the client.

You need both. Common. Treasury on Airwallex or Stripe. Product rail on x402. Do not force the agent through your FX vendor because the sales deck said "agentic."

Keywords people search, and the honest landing

  • "Airwallex vs Stripe" → treasury, FX, AU accounts. Not 402.
  • "Stripe MPP" / "Tempo" → machine HTTP payments on Stripe's terms.
  • "x402 Solana Australia" → pay-per-call, wallets, AUD stablecoins.

If a page ranks for all three without saying which job it is doing, it is a brochure.
